Psyche = The Will is Skeleton, the Desire is Strength, i.e. Muscles (Rudolf Valdec – Paralipomena to Plastic Anatomy)

The virtual exhibition entitled The Will is Skeleton, the Desire are Muscles – Rudolf Valdec and Bela Csikos Sesia: Anatomy Atlas for Artists is a joint project of the Fine Arts Archives of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Archives of the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb. The collaboration arose from the intention to present an archival item – the unpublished textbook entitled Plastic Anatomy, currently in the safekeeping of the Fine Arts Archives – within the institutional context of the Academy of Fine Arts, for which it was initially intended. In 1914, sculptor Rudolf Valdec and painter Bela Csikos Sesia jointly prepared an atlas in order to provide the students of the then Academy and all students of arts and crafts with the first domestic manual to master the subject of Plastic Anatomy. It ought to be mentioned that at the time this textbook came about, there still existed no Medical Faculty in Zagreb, as it was not founded before 1917. This was the reason why the authors were denied the opportunity to collaborate with national experts in anatomy.

It was an ambitious and pioneering endeavour of two artists, professors of the first generation of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb (then the Temporary College of Arts and Crafts). Unfortunately, the competent institutions of the time did not show any appreciation for these efforts. Although some parts of Plastic Anatomy have been used in teaching, the textbook has never been published as a complete manuscript. Until this exhibition, it had remained almost forgotten, stored at the Fine Arts Archives as a part of the legacy of Academy Member Rudolf Valdec. Some parts of the preparation have been preserved at the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters within the legacy of Academy Member Bela Csikos Sesia, whereas some other parts thereof are kept at the Križevci City Museum as a part of the donation by sculptor Julius Csikos, the painter's son. The preserved copy of the textbook presents essential testimony to the beginnings of teaching anatomy to artists in Croatia. This subject has remained the foundation and the starting point of artistic education until the present.

We have tried to tell the story of a rare archival item from the perspectives of two academies. The topical units of our story include the history and the analysis of the textbook, and the position of the subject of Plastic Anatomy since the foundation of the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb in 1907. Further essential parts of the exhibition are as follows: recent works by students of the Academy, created as part of the Anatomy curriculum; students’ state-of-the-art interpretations of the human body; and the multimedia part.

The City Office for Culture of the City of Zagreb provided support to the digitization of Plastic Anatomy in 2020. The textbook has been entirely digitized and stored in the Croatian Academy's digital repository. It is available to users for free on the Digital Collection Portal. The funds necessary for technical support to the virtual exhibition, conducted by ArhivPRO, have been additionally provided by the association ICARUS Croatia within the international project entitled Creative Europe CREARCH – Creative European Archives as Innovative Cultural Hubs.
